The Road to Samarkand

Serge Lutens Ambre Sultan perfume bottle against a Silk Road market at dusk

A lone trader arrives at Samarkand at dusk, carrying glass and metal from the west. The city meets him with everything he isn't carrying. Ten hours later, something of it still clings to the skin.

Grenouille, your writing is beautifully crafted. Ambre Sultan is one of my all-time favorites from Serge Lutens. “The nose, Christopher Sheldrake, constructed a road that precisely follows its intended path—to an ancient era and location that inexplicably appears to be eternally present.” This is an undeniable truth. This perfume is a journey through a place, enlightening you with experiences you may never have encountered. I couldn’t resist giving myself a spritz as soon as I began reading your post. Ambre Sultan is simply glorious.

Thanks so much! This theme practically walked in the door and announced itself 😆. And I agree. This is a masterpiece. Given the opening, I was not prepared for the path down which I was led, that resinous heart. Somehow, that herbal transition works on every level. I’ll never understand how they do it, but I’m glad they do. I appreciate you taking the time.

Great evocative writing for a fabulous perfume, Grenouille. That herbal quality in Ambre Sultan does set it apart from other ambers. It’s certainly one of the greats in its category.

Agreed. The transition, though… seamless, it feels like it belongsas part of the whole, rather than an interruption from one part to the next.
