Originally derived from the musk deer gland — a small pod near the deer’s abdomen producing a powerfully aromatic secretion. Now entirely synthetic in fine fragrance. The synthetic musk family is vast and diverse — white musks, macrocyclic musks, nitro musks and more.

Historically: musk deer (Moschus moschiferus) in Asia. Now: entirely synthetic — hundreds of different synthetic musk molecules with varying characters.

The character varies enormously depending on the specific musk molecule. White musks: clean, soft, powdery, skin-like — the smell of laundered fabric or clean skin. Macrocyclic musks: warmer, more animalic, more complex. Nitro musks: now largely restricted due to safety concerns. Natural musk was intensely animalic — warm, slightly fecal, deeply compelling.
