Salvia officinalis — a Mediterranean herb with an intensely aromatic, slightly camphor-like character.
Mediterranean origin, now grown worldwide. Essential oil distilled from leaves.
Earthy, herbal, slightly medicinal and slightly smoky. The camphor quality is more pronounced than in lavender. Distinctive and immediately recognizable. Has a dryness that prevents it from reading as green or fresh — sage smells more like earth than garden.
Sage adds masculine aromatic weight and earthy complexity. It is a common heart note in classic masculine Fougère and Aromatic compositions, where it provides depth and naturalism. It appears in some Oriental compositions as a spice-adjacent aromatic.
Also appears in: Fougère, Aromatic, Oriental / Amber
